Inspired by vintage Old Spice, a fragrance that recalls memories of sailing with my Grandfather, long walks on his beloved Orcas Island, and visits with his friends; intellectuals, and eccentrics.
This isn't a reproduction of vintage Old Spice; the original can still be found and is worth buying for the memories. This is my interpretation; the spices, citrus, carnation, and heliotrope are there, but there's also a hint of apple. The powdery beauty of Heliotrope blends beautifully with Carnation Absolute, Jasmine, and Honeysuckle. Aged Patchouli, Vanilla, Tuscan Orris, Tonka, Patchouli, and Labdanum. This is a complex fragrance that is finished with natural Ambroxide; it blends beautifully with real Ambergris. Please note, although technically natural, it's still Ambroxan and doesn't have the subtlety of many botanicals.
More about my Grandpa...
One such eccentric friend had built a sixty-five foot boat in the middle of the woods. App Applebaum was living on the boat that he had hung between two ancient trees with a complex pulley system. He had plans to sail to Cuba to teach math. Sixty-five year old App bought grains in bulk and foraged, desiring to be independent of capitalism. He also had a forty-year old girlfriend who shared his boat. After our very interesting visit, my Grandfather, a lifelong sailor, smiled as he shared that the boat would never float, and there was no route to the water from where it was built. I was twelve or thirteen at the time; he always encouraged curiosity and critical thinking.
He sailed to Tahiti, drove an Alpha Romeo, smoked a pipe, loved animals and humanity (even though he wasn't fond of some of the humans). He was a communist during the 1950's, worked to integrate the projects, and fought for beach access and safe stairs for visitors to the beach in front of his home. He made quite a few enemies over the public access issue, but the stairs were ultimately built. He was a devoted husband to his second wife, Irmgard, who was also a force of nature.
