House of Dana Perfume c. 1932
The House of Dana, inspired by Danaë the Greek Goddess of Music and Poetry, was founded by Javier Serra in Barcelona Spain, in 1932. Prior to launching the brand, Serra had been an executive at the perfume house Myrurgia. Serra enlisted Jean Carles to create a perfume, "a prostitute would wear," to launch his new company. Tabu, "the forbidden perfume," was the answer to the brief. An ambery animalic, with patchouli, vetiver, citrus, spices, musk and civet. The bold perfume was a huge success.

After the success of Tabu, the legendary French perfumer Jean Carles (Jan 12, 1882—Jul 8, 1966) continued to compose many other fragrances for the Serra's house. Ambush, Canoe, Emir, Platine, and 20 Carats to name a few.
